Sonam Kapoor Once Called Aishwarya Rai 'Aunty' When Latter Was Just 36 At That Time, Netizens React

Sonam Kapoor made her acting debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romantic film, Saawariya in 2007. However, it was a box office flop, and three years down the line, in 2010, she had her first commercial success with the film, I Hate Luv Storys. Since then, with her acting chops, she has made quite some name in the industry. But time and again, her controversial statements keep making headlines, landing her in trouble. 

Sonam Kapoor once called Aishwarya Rai 'aunty'

For instance, once Sonam Kapoor replaced Aishwarya Rai as the face of an international beauty brand. Although, it is also noteworthy that a few reports claimed Aishwarya had backed off from endorsing any beauty product after which, Sonam was given the opportunity. Following this, when Sonam was asked about the same, the diva mentioned that Aishwarya is an 'aunty from another generation'. This controversial remark from Sonam had created quite a stir in the industry, as Aishwarya was only 36 years old at that time.

Further, when Sonam sat for an interview with Hindustan Times, she was asked about the same incident. At this time, in her defence, she said that because Aishwarya had acted with her father, Anil Kapoor, Sonam felt that the two divas belonged to two different generations. She further clarified:

"Aish has worked with my dad so I have to call her aunty na!"

Today, on June 9, 2024, as Sonam Kapoor turned 39 years old, a Reddit user shared a snippet from her statement on Aishwarya. Soon, netizens started reacting to it. While one social media user penned, "The amount of stupid stuff this woman has said in the media", another mentioned, "The irony is that she said Ash is aunty coz she worked with her dad, but later Sonam jumps on the opportunity to act with much older Salman. How dumb she’s to not realize that young Ash was acting with Anil uncle, as she did later with Salman uncle."

Sonam later reacted to her viral 'aunty' statement on Aishwarya

Later, when Sonam had to receive huge flak for her comment on Aishwarya, she yet again sat for another interview with a leading daily. During the conversation, Sonam completely denied that she once age-shamed Aishwarya and shared that people had misquoted her. She shared:

"It's all gossip. I never said any of that. I don't want to remark on it anymore. A lot has been printed and said and it's all turn into very untidy and filthy, and I don't wish to get into it anymore. I really respect Abhishek as a person and had one of my best experiences working in Delhi 6. Aishwarya Rai is Aishwarya Rai. I never said that. I would address her in a deferential way, but I would never call her aunty."
