Sir Michael Gambon, or better known as ‘Professor Dumbledore’ from the Harry Potter series, had charmed generations of audiences with his exceptional acting mettle. Much like the film series itself, which has stood the testimony of time and has been loved by a massive fandom, the actor too, had carved a special place in the hearts of his fans. However, fast forward to today, the lovers of Harry Potter, or commonly referred to as the ‘Potterheads’ are mourning a huge loss.

In a tragic turn of events, popular actor, Sir Michael Gambon, known for his iconic portrayal of ‘Professor Dumbledore’ in the Harry Potter film franchise has passed away on September 28, 2023. The actor, who was 82-years-old, succumbed to pneumonia, after suffering for a long time. The official spokesperson of the actor, Clair Dobbs confirmed the news to the media. The statement issued can be read as:

“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love."

Sir Michael Gambon’s illustrious career of over five decades

The Irish-English descent actor, Michael Gambon had started his career as the member of the Royal National Theatre in the UK. His journey in the theatrical world includes some classic renditions of the Shakesperean plays, Othello, Hamlet and Macbeth. After making his film debut in the year 1965, he became a part of quite a few successful films. However, it was his portrayal or ‘Professor Albus Dumbledore’ in the Harry Potter series from 2004 to 2011, that gave him worldwide recognition. During his long career span, Sir Michael was honoured with three Olivier Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and four BAFTA Awards. Moreover, it was in 1998 that he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services and contributions to drama.

Rupert Grint, a.k.a 'Ron Weasely' from Harry Potter shares condolences

As soon as the sad news about Michael Gambon's passing away came to the surface, several fans of the film franchise took to their social media handles and expressed their grief on the same. Joining them was actor, Rupert Grint, who played the character of 'Ron Weasely' from the Harry Potter series, who also penned his condolences. Taking to his IG handle, Rupert dropped a picture of Michael Gambon from the film and wrote:

"So sad to hear about Michael. He brought so much warmth and mischief to every day on set. He captivated me as a kid and became a personal role model of mine for finding the fun and eccentricities in life. Sending all my love to his family, Rupert."

When Michael Gambon shared his views on playing ‘Dumbledore’ continuously for seven years

In one of his earlier interviews with the Irish Times, Sir Michael Gambon had opened up about his take on having to play the character of ‘Albus Dumbledore’ in the Harry Potter series continuously through seven years. When asked about how he could keep his uniformity throughout all the instalments of the film, he had hilariously mentioned:

“There’s no character really, it’s just me! Me dressed up in a costume! I’m essentially playing myself, that’s all I’m doing.”
