Director Reveals Why 'Pretty' Aishwarya's Debut Hindi Film Flopped, Says A Fan Tagged Her As Sister

Director, Rahul Rawail shared unheard anecdotes about then-newcomers, Aishwarya Rai, Bobby Deol and Kajol. He revealed why Aishwarya's debut Hindi film flopped, and called Bobby a 'laidback person'.

Director Reveals Why 'Pretty' Aishwarya's Debut Hindi Film Flopped, Says A Fan Tagged Her As Sister

Rahul Rawail, a famous Bollywood editor and director, introduced several newcomers like Kajol and Aishwarya Rai into the Hindi film industry. Aishwarya Rai stepped into Bollywood with the film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, which couldn't be that successful. But later, she went on to do wonders on the silver screens with some blockbuster movies. Recently, the director, Rahul Rawail mentioned what went wrong with Aishwarya Rai's debut movie.

Rahul Rawail recalls working with then-newcomers, Aishwarya Rai and Kajol

In a recent interview with Friday Talkies, Rahul Rawail mentioned that he likes to work with newcomers till now. He walked down the memory lane, and recalled that he had casted Kajol for Bekhudi, and the only reason Aishwarya Rai got Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya under his direction was that she was pretty and had bagged the trophy of Miss World back then.

Rahul Rawail also said that he always knew that Kajol is a very good actress but he didn't know that the actress would become a star one day. The director also praised Kajol and shared how she deserved all of it. Talking about why Aishwarya Rai's debut film didn't work, Rahul shared that although the actress is very pretty, there's a thing that went wrong. 

Rahul Rawail says a fan tagged Aishwarya as 'sister'

Talking about the same, Rahul Rawail recalled an incident when the film was released, and he was in London. The director stated that a fan was there to watch the shooting, and when Rahul asked him about Aishwarya, he told the director that the actress looked like his 'sister'. Sharing that the fan's comment was somewhat right, Rahul said:

"I was shooting in London when the film had released. So there were a few Indians who had to come to watch the shooting. There, a boy told me, I just returned from your film–Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. I asked him, ‘how was the film?’. He was like, ‘Aishwarya Rai is very good and pretty, but she is a kind of girl, I would like to make my sister. That got me thinking, Anyway, he was right.”

Bobby Deol says 'I am tired' only after two hours of shoot

In the same interview, Rahul Rawail stated that Bobby Deol is a remarkable actor, but at the same time, he is a 'laidback person'. Talking about the same, the director mentioned how only after two hours of shooting Bobby says that he is tired. He also added that the actor's interest in everything is really less. Rahul can be quoted as saying:

"Bobby is remarkable. But, at that time, he was a very laidback person. Just after two hours of shoot, he would be like, ‘I am tired.’ That way he was very laid back. And his interest in all that was very less."

Rahul shared that he kept asking Bobby to pay attention and work hard, but the actor wouldn't listen, and later, he was out of work for several years. Rahul also revealed that in the next years, things have changed, and now he talks to Bobby Deol every day. Rahul said:

"But, I kept saying him he is a very good actor and will do very well, ‘pay attention’, and he would be like, ‘no, I am okay’, but finally he didn’t get any work. Then I don’t know what changed him around and I speak to him regularly and he is absolutely fantastic.”
