Naseeruddin Shah Reveals Ratna's Parents Thought He Was 'Drug Addict' But They Were Living Together

In an interview, Naseeruddin Shah opened up about his love story with his darling wife, Ratna Pathak. He also revealed why her parents were against their marriage despite they were living together.

Naseeruddin Shah and his actress wife, Ratna Pathak Shah's love story is an inspiration for many of their fans. Their love story began on the sets of their first theatre together. And after a courtship for seven years, they tied the knot in 1982. Afterwards, they were blessed with two sons, Imaad Shah and Vivaan Shah. Apart from their personal life, they are also one of the great actors in the Hindi film industry. Now, in an interview, Naseeruddin opened up about why Ratna's parents were against their marriage despite the fact they were living together.

Naseeruddin Shah shares how he fell in love with Ratna Pathak at the first sight

In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Naseeruddin Shah revealed how he instantly fell for his wife, Ratna Pathak Shah at first sight. For the unversed, it was a theatre play in 1975, when Naseerudding was studying at the Film Institute, and he was introduced to Ratna for the play. At first, they became friends, which gradually blossomed into love. Elaborating more on this, the actor said:

“I just took to her right away. The moment I saw her. This was in 1975, when I had just come to Bombay from Pune, from the Film Institute. I had already done my first film while I was studying at the Film Institute, and we were introduced because she was acting in a play which Dubey Saab was directing. That’s when we met, and I just felt I’d like to know this person.”

Naseeruddin and Ratna have been inseparable since they understood their love for each other. Further, talking about their journey of togetherness, he added that Ratna has been his pillar of strength through every phase of his life. Moreover, it was during the process of rehearsals, they got to know each other and still now, they have remained friends with each other. The actor shared:

“She has stood by me rather through thick and thin, through very difficult times, through very good times. And I think the main reason for that is because we have remained friends."

Naseeruddin reveals Ratna’s parents thought he was an ‘ill-tempered drug addict’ and were against their union

Naseeruddin and Ratna were also living together during their courtship period. However, Ratna's parents were against their marriage. In the same conversation, Naseerudin revealed that Ratna's parents thought him a drug addict and ill-tempered. Moreover, Ratna's parents were against their union as Naseeruddin was a divorcee by then. For the unversed, Naseeruddin was earlier married to his first wife, Manara Sikri and they were blessed with a daughter, Heeba. However, Ratna fought with her parents for him and never left his hand. In Naseeruddin's words:

“Her parents were against it because I was married before, and I was a drug addict and ill-tempered. But she didn’t pay any heed to that, and she braved it. In between, she went to drama school for three years. But we were practically living together. So, when she moved in with me, it was like the most normal thing in the world.”
