Mumtaz Reveals Waheeda Rehman Was Down-To-Earth But Vyjayanthimala Didn't Talk To Her, 'Vo Log..'

Yesteryear actress, Mumtaz is extremely loved for her impeccable beauty. Moreover, she has etched a beautiful place in millions of hearts with her startling onscreen presence and acting skills. Since her acting debut with the 1958 film, Sone Ki Chidiya in 1958, she ruled the Hindi cinema in the 1960s and 70s and worked in multiple films. However, just like every other actress, she too, faced sanitation problems during her shooting days. Now, she opened up about the same. Moreover, she also revealed the kind of bonds she had with many other actresses.

Mumtaz opens up about sanitation during her shooting days

In an interview with the Dawn News, Mumtaz walked down the memory lanes of her shooting days for the song, Aap Ki Kasam, in 1974 from the film, Jai Jai Shiv Shankar. Throwing light on the improper sanitation problems at that time, the veteran actress revealed she had to walk miles in search of a washroom during the shoot. However, Mumtaz mentioned that now she is happy that female artists today have vanity vans and proper sanitation facilities on film sets. Recalling the time when she shot the song, Mumtaz shared:

“For miles and miles there were no bathrooms during the shoot of the song Jai Jai Shiv Shankar. So, if I had to use the washroom, I would take my hairdresser along in search of one. Now, they have air-conditioned rooms. People today are quite lucky to have everything. All of these facilities were not there in our times. I am happy that today girls have the facility to use the washroom else it’s difficult for a woman to go miles and miles for certain things which are very important for them.”

Mumtaz talked about the kind of bonds she had with yesteryear actresses

Further, in the same conversation, she talked about the kind of relationship she had with other eminent actresses. It was during the time when Mumtaz had just stepped into the film business, and actresses like Waheeda Rehman and Vyjayanthimala were ruling the Hindi film industry. Thus, Mumtaz mentioned how older actresses used to keep a distance from the young stars. She further mentioned that Waheeda Rehman was a down-to-earth actress, whereas actresses like Vyjayanthimala didn't talk to her. She added:

“Vo logg toh bohot bade the aur hum toh chote the, they didn’t like mingling with us. There were a few exceptions like Waheeda (Rehman) ji. She used to be very down to earth. Vyjayanthimala also belonged to the same era, but she didn’t talk to me.”

Further, explaining the reason behind it, Mumtaz mentioned that those big names in the industry then used to think young actresses were ‘inferior’ to them. Thus, Mumtaz added, “Some people don’t want to talk to people inferior to them. Some artists don’t even give autographs when they are on the street.” However, gradually, as Mumtaz started making her place in the industry, she also managed to make friends with stars like Anju Mahendru and Poonam Sinha (Shatrughan Sinha’s wife). She still shares a close bond with them.

She mentioned that the moment when she could gracefully show off some moves from her original performance in the film was simply beautiful. However, she mentioned that she did it only for Asha. Further, Mumtaz had mentioned:

“I did some simple steps. Waise bachpan mein itni mehenat kari thi toh ab aa hi jata hai naturally. I am just glad that I am still graceful. Waise, I don’t dance at functions, I only did it for Asha ji. She had invited me to her place recently and we danced on the occasion. Har jaga dance karo toh uski respect bhi nahi hoti. Woh kahawat hai na… Qadar kho baithta hai roz ka aana jaana.”
