Madhur Bhandarkar Says Priyanka, Kareena Slashed Their Fees For His Films Amid Entourage Cost Debate

Madhur Bhandarkar is one of the prominent names in the Indian film industry. The filmmaker, who made his directorial debut in 1999, has made some critically acclaimed films, including Chandni Bar, Page 3, Fashion, and many more. Recently, the 55-year-old director shared how certain actresses would slash their fees due to the constraints in a movie's budget.

Madhur Bhandarkar reveals how several female actors had slashed their fees for his films

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Madhur Bhandarkar revealed that female actors like Tabu, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, and many more just wanted his films to be made. Hence, these actresses did not burden the filmmaker with their fees. Sharing how actresses slashed their market fees, Madhur said:

"They didn’t charge the market price from me because they were keen on making these movies. The entire film was resting on their shoulders so everybody slashed their prices."

Madhur Bhandarkar shares Tabu didn't charge any fee for Chandni Bar

Further, the filmmaker recalled how Tabu, who starred in his 2001 crime drama, Chandni Bar, agreed to a unique payment arrangement. Madhur shared that the actress had made a deal against the number of tickets sold for the film and didn’t charge any other fee. Revealing that Chandni Bar was made in a budget of just Rs 1.5 crore, he said:

"Since I only had a budget of Rs. 1.5 crore for Chandni Bar, Tabu didn't charge any fee for the film. She took money against Bombay or Delhi territory and nothing else apart from that. She worked with such conviction."

Madhur Bhandarkar made such revelations amidst the rising debate around stars' increasing entourage costs. The 55-year-old opined on the same topic and discussed that these should be controlled as they ultimately increase the cost of the film exponentially. He also shared that he never faced such a situation, and the entourage cost always depended upon the budget of the film.

Madhur Bhandarkar talks about his plans for a sequel to Fashion

Meanwhile, in the same conversation, Madhur also shared his take on the sequel to his critically acclaimed film, Fashion, which stars Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut in lead roles. He discussed that the story of his 2008 film can now be made into a series, exploring the decline of supermodels as a potential storyline. He was quoted as saying:

"I feel 'Fashion' has all the potential for a sequel. Today, the world of fashion has changed. As a filmmaker, I feel I have a lot of material and hence, it can be turned into a show, spanning a couple of seasons. But it is also apt for a film. Hence, nothing has been decided yet. The subject, however, is interesting."

Madhur also discussed how Bollywood celebrities have now taken over the world of fashion and how supermodels have almost disappeared from the scene. The filmmaker also posed an intriguing question: Can anyone "recall the name of any supermodel?" He then added that if Fashion 2 is made, then it would revolve around this storyline.

Madhur Bhandarkar, who completed 25 years in the industry as a filmmaker, also talked about his feud with Karan Johar on the title of his Netflix show, Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives. He shared that his project titled Bollywood Wives is one of his ambitious projects, and he would make it someday. Moreover, the storyline of Madhur's project will be very different from KJo's show.
