How To Plan A Perfect Vegan Wedding

Veganism is the new trend catching up among young men and women. This rather western sounding concept entails not consuming any animal-based products, meaning abstaining from not just meat, but even milk and milk products. True vegans stay away from wearing silk or leather too! So, to have the perfect wedding, vegans might really have to scratch their heads, given the number of animal-products used even in vegetarian cooking in India, and the yards of silk that goes in wedding wear!

But if you or your partner, or both of you, are vegans, you are on just the right page. We have for you the best tips to plan for a vegan wedding, without having to compromise. We are sure that your guests would love this too!

Be very clear with your demands

Whether you are planning the wedding with your friends and family or whether you have a professional wedding planner doing it for you, have a detailed discussion with them about every little thing that you have in mind with regard to the wedding. This will give them a clear idea about how to plan things, and what exactly it is that you and your partner expect.

Don’t keep it a surprise

Although most of your wedding guests might be close friends and family, who know about your preferences, there might be some who might not enjoy your vegan way of life. So, it is best that you inform them about the special wedding either while inviting them, or mention about it on the wedding cards.

But if that is not possible, for an indoor venue too, you can ask the decorator to use fresh flowers and leaves to decorate the chairs, pillars, the stage, etc.

Explain it well to the caterer

Being a vegan means avoiding any and every animal-based product. But having a wedding in India, without using milk, ghee, curd, paneer, khoya, etc. can be a really tough task. The best way to deal with this obstacle is to shortlist at least three to four caterers, and discuss with them in detail about your requirements and expectations about food. Even if a caterer is known for their non-vegetarian specialities, do not rule them out completely. They might come up with some interesting suggestions or delicious alterations to the regular menus.

We did feature an Indian couple, Jay Thakkar and Ruchi Parikh, a few days back (Read to know more about their vegan wedding), who went all-vegan on their big day. Do not leave everything for your caterer to decide. Here are some suggestions from Ruchi and Jay's wedding that you can discuss with your caterer:

  • Use soya paneer (tofu) instead of regular paneer.
  • Vegan curd or soya curd is the best alternative for regular curd.
  • Replace ghee with vegetable oil.
  • Soya milk can be used for desserts.

Put some thought into your wedding attire

Most traditional wedding wear has a lot of silk used. You can choose not to go for those, and pick artificial silk outfits. Even for your footwear, you can go for the faux leather ones. Even for your jewellery, if you like pearls, you can go for artificial pearls.
