Expert Tips To Choose The Best Red Lipstick

A red lip is always classic, stylish and fun. The most helpful tip, when it comes to choosing a red lipstick is that the fairer your skin the more orangey reds will look good on you. Look for a deeper red and avoid anything too pink. If your tone is more medium, then a darker blue-based red will look best. People with darker features look beautiful in blue-based reds. These colour contrasts lift your features. To simplify it further, I have divided the skin tones into three broad categories:

Fair skin tones

If you have a peachy complexion with pink undertones, opt for coral reds or matte reds with a hint of orange to avoid it from looking too overpowering. Choose shades with a coral or brick undertone that is a bit fiery if you have a peachy complexion with yellow undertones.

Medium skin tones

In case if you have a more olive or golden skin, most shades will work on you. Make a pick from true reds, cranberry shades and pink-based reds. You will look electrifying in all.

Dark skin tones

If you have a deeper and intense complexion, with cool undertones blue-based reds like fig, dark cherry, plum and maroon. Stay away from anything too bright as it might look too harsh.

I am sure that you would get intimidated when at a cosmetic store surrounded by many shades of red! When you are in the store, apply the lipstick that you are considering on your lips with some help from the artist there. Then look away from the mirror for a fresh eye. You can also step out of the store & judge if the colour suits you in natural light or take a photo using your camera phone. If you are satisfied with it, then you have found your perfect red. Don’t let the salesperson convince you to buy it– she is just doing her job of selling the product. You and only you have to live with the choice you have made.

So what kind of makeup can you wear with a red lipstick?

Your eye shadow needs to be a neutral colour and not too bright or dramatic. Use shades like bronze, gold, pink, peach, copper, etc. all over the lid and use a dark matte brown on the outer corner to add some depth and dimension. Another way to wear a red lip is by drawing the classic winged liner! This is a trend that has been popular since years on actresses and models. I feel that the winged/cat liner looks classy and very elegant.

How to apply the perfect red lip?

You need to make sure all the dead skin is off your lips before applying any lip colour. Use sugar crystals by rubbing them gently on your lips to exfoliate and condition them, making it easier for colour to go on. Then apply a layer of lip conditioner- this will create a boost of much-needed moisture. Use a lip liner that is similar to the red shade of lipstick you are going to use (or use a nude colour). Carefully line your lips and fill it in entirely starting in the center, then moving outward towards the corners, you can build up the colour and intensity. If you made a mistake, use makeup remover on a Q-tip (cotton bud) to swipe off the excess. Make sure to apply the lipstick with a lip brush. The brush ensures that the lipstick is applied precisely. Lastly, dab the lips with a tissue to give them that perfect matte effect.
