Bindu Recalls Not Getting An Award For Debut Film But Jaya Bachchan Did, Calls It 'Andar Ki Baatein'

Back in the 80s and 90s when no heroine would dare to play a negative character, actress Bindu thought of taking the risk. She received gaalis but the ‘Mona Darling’ of Hindi cinema accepted it as an appreciation of her craft. However, Bindu had also been a victim of partiality in the glamour world as she was denied an award for her debut film because she was a newcomer.

Bindu talked about not receiving an award as she was a newcomer

In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bindu talked about the same and revealed that such decisions were made behind closed doors. In her words:

“Ye andar ki baatein hain, merko pata bhi chala tha ki sabse zyada votes milne ki bavajood, mujhe award nahi diya gaya. This happened three to four times, and this has always happened at Filmfare."

Bindu revealed Jaya Bachchan received the award because she was a heroine

Bindu further recalled how she was denied the award despite being nominated stating that she was a newcomer. Digging a sly dig at her contemporary, Jaya Bachchan, Bindu stated:

“I was nominated for Do Raaste. But they were like 'How can we give you an award for your first film?' But at the same time, they gave Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) an award for Guddi because she was the heroine. They didn't give it to me. I was nominated for Dastaan also. I got votes, but again they didn't give me the award."

Bindu’s tryst with negative roles and getting the stamp of a vamp

Born as Bindu Nanubhai Desai in Gujarat to noted film producer, Nanubhai Desai and theatre actress, Jyotsna, Bindu was always fascinated by the glamour world and had wanted to be an artist. She was a big fan of Vyjayanthimala and began her acting career with the 1962 film, Anpadh.

Although she wanted to be a heroine, her directors thought her to be too thin and with Do Raaste, Bindu started playing negative characters. She chose the role of an antagonist without even thinking about people’s reactions and the stamp of being a vamp.

The conviction in Bindu’s characters were such that women would hide their husbands from her as they believed she would flirt with them. Talking about the same in a throwback interview with ETimes, Bindu shared:

“When male fans would come to meet me, their wives would pull them away. Women would hide their husbands from me. They feared dore daalegi (I’d hit on their men). As though the husbands were so handsome! I’d laugh it off. But today people have understood the difference between reel and real.”
