Amjad Khan's Son, Shadaab Khan Reveals Why His Father Wasn't Showing Up, After His Birth

One of the most iconic villains of Bollywood, was none other than late actor, Amjad Khan's iconic character of 'Gabbar Singh' from the film, Sholay. His iconic dialogue from the movie, “Kitne aadmi the?” has been memorised by almost every 90s kid. Apart from this, the actor had also given stellar performances in many of his blockbusters films like Satte Pe Satta, Qurbani, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, and many more. But unfortunately, his personal life was not a bed of roses, and he had faced financial crisis for quite a number of times.

For the unversed, Amjad Khan had tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart, Shehla Khan after dating for many years. Together, they were blessed with three adorable kids, Shadaab Khan, Ahlam Khan and Seemaab Khan. And at the age of 51, Amjad had left for the heavenly abode after a sudden heart attack in 1992. However, his wife and kids have treasured the legendary actor in their hearts forever.

In an interview with the Times Of India, late Amjad Khan's son and actor, Shadaab Khan was asked whether he can be called his father's lucky mascot. To this, Shadaab noddingly revealed an incident during his birth. He added that his father didn't have any money at that time to release his mother, Shehla Khan and the baby boy from the hospital. Further, Shadaab mentioned that, however, luck had come knocking at their doors, and Amjad had signed the film, Sholay on that day. And thus, the film's producer, Chetan Anand had helped his father by paying him an amount of Rs. 400. Talking about the same, Shadaab said:

"Yes (laughs), but father didn’t have money to pay so that my mother (Shehla Khan) could be discharged from the hospital I was born in. She started crying. My dad was not showing up at the hospital; he was ashamed to show his face. (Late) Chetan Anand whose film ‘Hindustan Ki Kasam’ he’d done then, happened to see my father holding his head in a corner. Chetan Anand saab gave him Rs 400 so that my mother and I could come home."

Further, in the same conversation, Shadaab was asked whether he and his family had ever noticed a change in Amjad's personality after doing the character of the ruthless dacoit 'Gabbar Singh' in the film, Sholay. To this, the doting son mentioned that though he was very young back then, however, if anything would have happened then, his mother, Shehla must have mentioned it to him. Talking about the same, he said:

"I was very young then. So I don't recall. But if there had been a change in his personality, my mom would have told me by now. As much as I know, my father never brought his work home."

Shadaab also opened up on his father's sudden demise, which had left his entire family devastated. Recalling the heart-wrenching incident, he mentioned his brother, Ahlam Khan, who had got an asthma attack post the incident and added that a lot more things had happened afterwards. Shadaab explained:

"It was a Sunday (July 2, 1992). I had come home from outside. It was evening time. My mom said that I should wake up dad as he's been sleeping since some time. When I reached him, I found he was cold. We called the doctor who was nearby and he said that he's probably got a heart attack. The doctor asked for water soluble adrenalin injection. I drove like a mad man and returned with the injection. I couldn't get it very easily and finally found one at a chemist near Asha Parekh Hospital. I returned, handed over the injection to the doctor and looked at him very expectantly but he said, "We don't need this injection anymore." I asked him, "Is he going to be okay?". He replied, "No, you are just a few seconds late." I hit the doctor, slugged one of my dad's closest friends and smashed crockery. I went on to bang my fist into the wall, which took a very long time to heal. My dad's demise affected my younger brother Seemab too in a bad way. After a few days, he got an asthma attack. That was not all; a lot more happened."
