#1. Examine your body

This is the easiest way to find out one’s body shape. Wear as little as possible, as you might not be able to get a clearer picture of your curves while wearing full clothes. Now, stand in front of the mirror and check the shape of your torso, waist, rib cage, and hip line and check which part is the narrowest and which one is the largest. You can also measure these parts with a measuring tape. While checking your body parts, you also need to examine the parts that are straight and the ones which have a curved shape. While doing so, make a note of the best assets and the problem areas.

#2. Measure your bust

As said earlier, you can also measure the parts of the body with a measuring tape. While measuring your body, start with the upper body. Stand in front of a mirror. Look in to mirror to read the measurement in inches.

#3. Measure your waist

This will help you determine how wide your mid-section is. Stand in front of a mirror and wrap the measuring tape near the slimmest part of your waist. Keep your stomach and back relaxed while doing so. Measure your waist by matching the ends of the tape in the centre front of the waist and note it down. While doing so, make sure that you are not pulling the tape tight.

#4. Measure your hip

This is the final step for measuring your body to know your body shape. Take the measuring tape around the widest part of your hip; do not keep distance between your legs and stand in front of a mirror. Bring the ends of the tape in centre front of your hip and note down the measurement. Do not tighten the tape.

#5. Compare the measurements

Once you have all the measurements, compare them with the different body types. You can check the following list to find out your body shape:

  • The hourglass or the 8-shaped body type is when the measurements of the bust and hips are similar and the waist is smaller than both.
  • The inverted triangle or wedge-shaped body is when the measurement of the bust is more than the waist and the hips; the hips have the smallest measurement.
  • The rectangle-shaped body is when the hips are wide and the waist and bust is narrow.
  • The pear or triangle-shaped body is when the hips measure more than the bust and waist. Most of the times, women with pear-shaped body have wide shoulders and slender arms.
  • The apple shape is when the hips the narrow, with slender legs and the bust and waist measures more than the hip. In the apple-shaped body, usually the bust and waist have similar measurements.
